imec.ICON Smart Waterway

Abstract

The SmartWaterWay project aimed to make autonomous shipping using pallet shuttle barges profitable for logistics companies. It enabled low-cost alternatives for communication, positioning and sensing to cut automation costs to EUR 100,000 or less. Additional data from sensing and localization infrastructure at key waterway locations – combined with remote monitoring of 4-5 unmanned cargo vessels by a single captain – enabled simpler navigation, decrease in the costs of infrastructure sensors and unlocked significant cost savings by eliminating the need for crew.

Horizon2020 5G Blue-print

Abstract

5G Blue-print aims to design and implement a 5G network for CAM (Connected and Automated Mobility) services with stringent requirements on latency, handover time, reliability, packet loss, and throughput. Secondly, tailor and implement the prototype of a teleoperated system. Thirdly, implement and deploy enabling functions guaranteeing the safety of teleoperated transport. And finally validate the end-to-end teleoperated transport solution supported by 5G in real-life scenarios in cross-border conditions.

Horizon2020 Novimove

Abstract

Novimove aims to solve three main problems:
1. A density problem: the entire logistics system needs to be compressed, meaning higher load factors, less time in port, shorter waiting times at bridges and locks, optimal navigation on rivers;
2. A data fusion problem: data collection, access to data sources, data perception and data analysis must be significantly improved to support a more dense logistics system;
3. A plan and control problem: effective management of cargo flows, vessels, port terminals and waterways infrastructures for a compressed logistics system depends on data and information qualities that are not sufficiently available yet.
The main contributions of Novimove are:
1. Improved load factor of containers by means of cargo reconstruction;
2. Improved port logistics by reducing waiting times at terminals and sailing time between terminals;
3. Improved river navigation by satellite, sensor and data fusion;
4. Reduced waiting time at bridges and locks by dynamic scheduling system;
5. Innovative vessel solutions to cope with variable water levels;
6. New business models in current stakeholders’ networks.

DBC.ICON SSAVE

Abstract

De Blauwe Cluster ICON Shared Situational Awareness for Vessels (SSAVE) revolved around enabling vessel to vessel communication for the sake of creating the real-time digital twin of the vessel surrounding in port and inland scenarios. The research was carried out for the creation of a middleware communication framework which bootstrapped real-time peer to peer communication via Kafka brokers. The goal was to demonstrate this communication at the granularity of sensors and using it for detecting objects via distributed sensor fusion. The analysis on tha data quality of sensor streams was provided along with real-time telemetery of the state of the communication.

Horizon2020 Vital-5G

Abstract

The strategic objective of VITAL-5G is to create an open, virtualized and flexible experimentation facility comprised of an intelligent virtual platform, three distributed European 5G-testbeds and associated vertical infrastructure at Antwerp, Athens and Galati, to enable the testing and validation of Transport & Logistics (T&L) Network Applications (NetApps) in real-life conditions, utilizing 5G connectivity.
